Overview:
- Fed policy remains on hold: At the July 29, 2026 FOMC meeting, the Federal Reserve held the policy rate at 3.50%–3.75% for a fifth consecutive meeting by a 9-3 vote, as Chair Kevin Warsh signaled a reduced reliance on forward guidance in favor of incoming data. The Middle East conflict and a 20%+ surge in crude oil through July added to economic uncertainty, while global central banks diverged on their own paths.
- U.S. economic growth decelerated further in Q2 2026, with real GDP up 1.5% annualized (down from 2.1% in Q1 2026), as AI-related investment and resilient consumer spending helped offset a drag from weaker net exports.
- Inflation eased notably after running hot earlier in the quarter: in June 2026, headline CPI cooled to 3.5% YoY — its largest monthly decline since April 2020 — while core PCE moderated to 3.3%, reinforcing a cautious disinflation narrative.
- Labor markets remain stable but subdued, with unemployment holding at 4.2% and payroll growth slowing to just 57,000 in June (though still up 506,000 year-over-year), consistent with the same “low-hire, low-fire” environment that continues to ease concerns about a sharper downturn.
- Consumer activity remains bifurcated but showed early signs of stabilizing, as retail sales rose 6.7% YoY in June even as consumer sentiment posted its first meaningful improvement of the year, climbing to 55.2 in July — though it remains historically depressed, with spending growth still concentrated among high-income households.
- Interest-rate markets sent more mixed signals this quarter: the yield curve has re-steepened further to a 0.92% spread, historically consistent with improving forward growth expectations, even as widening high-yield credit spreads point to some emerging bond-market unease — with equities continuing to perform well as the S&P 500 climbed 9.41% year-to-date.
